Forest Management Studies in Nestorio

In June 2017, TAP announced it will fund the development of five Forest Management Studies in the Nestorio Municipality. This project supports the livelihoods of ca. 3,000 people living in the area, as the research will enable them to continue sustainable logging and other forestry best practice. The studies also ensure the environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of forests for present and future generations.

€200,000 investment

The Nestorio Municipality was unable to commission new Forest Management Studies after the previous ones expired in 2016. New studies are necessary for forestry practices, as they specify the forest management models to be applied and the expected timber volume to be cut by place and time.

Consequently, up-to-date Forest Management Studies in Nestorio are essential for locals to continue sustainable logging. These studies will be valid for at least 10 years. In addition to ensuring the livelihoods of locals, they will also contribute to sound environmental management and promote regional development.

The initiative was welcomed by the local community. The Mayor of Nestorio, Mr. Paschalis Getsios, stressed the project’s necessity and importance, as it ensures jobs for loggers, carriers and lorry drivers, while also boosting municipal revenue.
