Dimitris Chatzipapas
Pipe-welder, Komotini
"A professional experience that became a lived experience."
My job is pipe-welding and I’ve worked for many years in pipeline projects. I really enjoyed working on this project because it’s something new and, mostly, because it took me a step further and taught me a lot.
For starters, I was given training to use a special welding technique I wasn’t even aware of. Before the beginning of the project, I attended seminars over two months, in which we were taught this method. In fact, this is the first time that this welding technique was used in Greece. So, I have acquired a new and special skill.
And, although some things may have struck us as a bit strange in the beginning, at the end we all got … something good out of it. For example, we experienced the extensive safety measures and standards applied by foreigner companies when working, and it became a living experience for us; to such an extent that we are now careful with everything – even the speed limit. I feel that with this project, we’ve become a little more "European" regarding safety and rules.
I worked for almost two years with the pipeline and I liked it a lot. Both as a project, and as regards the working conditions. And I would love to continue working this way.
