Health & safety

For TAP safety is our core value. We aim to deliver world-class health and safety performance and we have an over-riding duty to avoid or mitigate any adverse health and safety issues associated with our operations on our host communities, our workforce and the environment.

We are committed to providing safe and healthy working conditions as well as informing, training, and consulting our employees and staff on health and safety issues.

We work systematically to understand and manage risk, eliminate hazards, and improve our processes and procedures. Our expectation is zero incidents.

In line with international good practice, TAP has developed eight golden rules of safety. They follow activities and risks which commonly lead to serious injuries and fatalities, for instance working at hights or in confined spaces. A minimum standard is applied to each one of these eight activities and risks.

Our quality, health, safety, and environmental (QHSE) policy outlines our commitment to identifying, avoiding, minimising and mitigating any adverse QHSE issues associated with our operations. The policy and its principles apply to all our activities and to all personnel and third parties working for TAP.

Culture and training

Our ‘safety-first, zero-harm' ethos guides all our activities. We strive to act in an ethical and socially responsible manner to avoid negative impacts, enhance positive effects and contribute to sustainable development. To this extent, an effective and proactive HSE culture is essential and supported by a thorough training programme. All personnel have the necessary qualifications and training for their tasks, and training needs are evaluated regularly.

TAP has a safe and attractive working environment, characterised by respect, trust and cooperation. We encourage participation and consultation, effective two-way communication, and empower everyone to be accountable for their actions.

All personnel are responsible for ensuring that our QHSE policy is understood and implemented at all levels of the organisation.

Our values

At the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, we believe that how results are achieved is just as important as the results themselves. We have created a corporate culture in which our people can thrive and work together effectively as a team.

Continuous learning ethos

We have created a culture of ‘lessons learned’ through health and safety networks where day-to-day experiences are shared and integrated into our operations. Individuals are encouraged to report all incidents and near misses. Incidents are investigated to identify the necessary actions to prevent their recurrence

The health and safety performance of TAP’s contractors and suppliers is also monitored closely at all times to ensure that they are meeting their obligations.

Delivering on our commitments

Our safety first culture helps increase safety awareness across the organisation. This mindset focuses on managing safety hazards associated with operating a high-pressure gas system.

The safety first culture showcases our technical safety standards and the measures established to manage risks to people, communities, the environment and TAP’s commercial obligations and company reputation.

Our track record on health and safety is demonstrated by the following statistics:

  • over 6,000 people have been involved with the pipeline construction during peak activities
  • 50 million man-hours have been worked and over 136 million kilometres have been driven without any major accident
  • our lost time incident frequency rate for 2019 was 0.21 (0.42 since inception), exceeding our target of ≤ 0.60
  • our total recordable incident frequency rate for 2019 was 0.64 (1.43 since inception), far exceeding our ≤ 2.65 target
