About natural gas

Natural gas is the cleanest of fossil fuels. It provides an efficient and reliable solution to support the growing demand for affordable, low carbon energy supply and is key to achieving the EU's climate goals.

Natural gas is a fuel that can reliably supply Europe’s rapidly changing energy systems with cleaner energy, while helping to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve air quality and the environment.

The cleanest fossil fuel

Natural gas is the cleanest of fossil fuels and can help reduce Europe’s reliance on more carbon-intensive energy sources, such as coal and lignite.

As outlined by the European Commission in its Energy Union Strategy and Green Deal agenda, natural gas is a vital component in the EU’s transition towards a low-carbon economy.

Combined with the application of innovative technologies, such as Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS), natural gas can help achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

By replacing commonly used fuels such as coal and wood, natural gas will help the EU achieve net-zero GHGs by 2050. Electricity generated from natural gas produces less than half of the GHGs of coal, and up to a third less that of oil. Natural gas also provides environmental and health benefits by improving air quality and reducing smog and dangerous particulate matter.

An accessible, affordable and secure option

In 2018, natural gas accounted for almost half of total demand growth. Its use will continue to rise with the global increase in energy demand. It therefore has an important role to play in the decarbonisation of Europe’s energy systems.

As Europe transitions to a low carbon future, it still requires a diverse, secure, reliable and affordable energy supply to help fuel its economy, warm its homes, and to remain competitive.

Natural gas will continue to be part of Europe’s energy mix and in combination with renewables, guarantee an uninterrupted energy supply, while at the same time achieving EU’s climate objectives.

Efficient and safe transportation

Natural gas pipelines can make a major contribution to the EU energy security by supplementing other existing energy sources, as well as complementing new gas supplies such as liquified natural gas (LNG).

The gas industry is aware of the importance of addressing methane emissions in order to ensure that gas and the related infrastructure remain a significant component of the EU’s energy mix in the long-term. It has made good progress in the identification of all significant sources of emissions in the different segments of the gas value chain, from production, transportation to utilisation.

Existing gas grids ensure the reliability and flexibility of the energy system through the application of state-of-the-art technologies. Pipeline technology will continue to improve as major industry players work together to address emission issues.
