Reducing emissions

Committed to a sustainable energy future, the Trans Adriatic Pipeline is on a decarbonisation pathway, which prioritises initiatives with the greatest impact on reducing the greenhouse gas emissions, as well as increasing energy efficiency measures.

At TAP, we are focused on making sure the transition towards a low-carbon economy happens in a sustainable manner.

During the pipeline’s planning, design and construction phases, we carefully selected the equipment, operating philosophies and practices to reduce emissions along the entire value chain, meet the strict air quality thresholds and implemented the Best Available Techniques (BAT). Some examples are the selection of high efficiency gas turbines with supplementary technology to reduce emissions of nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide and unburnt gas, optimised control and scheduling of testing to minimise associated emissions.

Now that it is fully operational, TAP has developed an Energy Transition Strategy for achieving climate neutrality by 2050. The Carbon Management Plan (CMP) 2022-2025 is part of this broader short, mid, and long-term Energy Transition Strategy, identifying main emission sources, setting greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets and describing the initiatives per year to achieve these targets.

In 2025, TAP aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 5%, its global methane emissions by 8% and its fugitive emissions by 54% compared to the 2022 forecast.

At the end of 2022, TAP joined the Oil & Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP 2.0), a voluntary initiative launched by the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) to support Oil & Gas companies in reducing methane emissions. TAP is aimed at obtaining the “Gold Standard” acknowledgement within OGMP 2.0 during 2025 for its plans to measure and reduce methane emissions.

We are a registered member of the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (e-PRTR), the Europe-wide register that provides easily accessible key environmental data from industrial facilities in European Union Member States and in Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

About natural gas

Natural gas is the cleanest of fossil fuels. It provides an efficient and reliable solution to support the growing demand for affordable, low carbon energy supply and is key to achieving the EU's climate goals.
