WORKS OF INSPIRATION - Development of Local Infrastructure
TAP's trans-regional project WORKS OF INSPIRATION | Development of local infrastructure, regards infrastructure-related works, implemented across all three Northern Greek regions traversed by TAP.
1. Construction and reconstruction of playgrounds in Northern Greece
From June 2018 onwards, TAP has constructed or reconstructed more than 45 playgrounds in Northern Greece.
The first 6 playgrounds were delivered in September 2018 to the Komotini municipality and, more specifically, to the local communities of Messochori, Kosmio, Roditis, Thrylorio, Fylakas and Megalo Doukato.
The project continued with 4 playgrounds constructed in Skydra, 7 in Pella, 7 in Kastoria, 14 in the Chalkidona municipality, 2 in Prosotsani and 6 in Eordaia municipality.
2. Upgrade of the Peplos-Kipoi irrigation network in Evros
In December 2020, TAP delivered its biggest –to date– WORKS OF INSPIRATION | Development of Local Infrastructure project: a €1 million upgrade of 1.6km of the Peplos-Kipoi irrigation network in Evros. For the implementation of the project, TAP collaborated with the Alexandroupolis Municipality and the Local Organisation for Irrigation Improvement (TOEV), which operates and manages the network.
The irrigation network was built 20 years ago and did not operate properly, due to sustained damages in various sections. The aging irrigation system no longer met the needs of the area’s 1,200 residents whose primary source of income is local farming and agriculture.
For the implementation of this challenging project, TAP’s contractor conducted a feasibility study in 2018, which was assessed and approved by both the Municipality and the TOEV. The first test excavations were carried out in June 2019 and shortly after the crews started work on the network.
They replaced part of the main header, in both the western and eastern branch of the network, and the connections to secondary existing networks. The completion of the project has greatly contributed to the optimal operation of TOEV, the key results being a 40% reduction in electricity consumption at the pumping station and the increase of the water pressure – to the benefit of farmers during the irrigation period.
3. Renovation of Dorilaiou street at the Central Square of Serres
TAP’s first WORK OF INSPIRATION, a €248,000 investment, was the renovation of the (former) Dorilaiou Street at the Central Square of Serres. The project included:
- paving the street, as well as the walkways leading to an existing pond, with Karystos schist stones and decorative elements
- creating a two-way paved bike road
- creating tactile paving for the visually impaired
- installing a lighting network and lighting posts
- installing outdoor benches and two fountains with potable water, built with natural stone slabs.
The Central Square is located at the very heart of the city of Serres, extending over 70,000m2. The newly renovated street improves the quality of life for residents and visitors, providing them a beautiful recreational space for walking or cycling, while also upgrading the neighbouring area.
4.TAP upgrades rural roads in Agia Eleni, Serres
TAP implemented another WORKS OF INSPIRATION project in the Agia Eleni community of the Serres municipality. The project regards the asphalting of two rural roads, of ca. 330m in total.
The two roads constitute the centre of the village’s social life; the place where the 500 residents of Agia Eleni hold their public events and celebrations – such as the annual "Anastenaria" festival (traditional fire-walking).
The asphalting project was undertaken by a local contractor and completed within a single day, on April 4th 2019, to minimise impact. Works were monitored by the technical services of the Serres municipality that also took responsibility of the maintenance of the upgraded roads, as soon as they were delivered.
