Athens, Greece. As part of its Social and Environmental Investment (SEI) programme, the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) AG funded the construction of 7 playgrounds in the municipality of Kastoria in the region of Western Macedonia, in Greece. The playgrounds are located in: Ieropigi, Maniakoi, Oinoi, Mesopotamia, Chiliodendro, Dispilio and Korisos and this project is part of a wider series of TAP-funded playgrounds in Northern Greece.

Thanks to this project with a total value of approximately 485,000 euros, children of these 7 communities with a population of about 10,000 habitants, will be able to play and exercise in a safe and modern environment.

The works included the installation of new toys and other equipment such as paving blocks, benches, lighting, fencing, bins, kiosks and taps. In total, 3,885m2 of playgrounds were delivered.

The Mayor of Kastoria, Ioannis Korentsidis, welcomed the completion of the project and underlined the significant benefits it brings to the livelihood of Kastoria residents. Mr Korentsidis said: “Safe playgrounds that enhance the creativity of our kids and allow them to have fun in their spare time are vital.  It is very satisfying to see that the playgrounds were delivered to the local communities.”

Ioannis Maris, TAP Country Representative Greece, said: “TAP has been supporting the local communities of Western Macedonia from the construction of the pipeline until now that it is fully operational. Improving the quality of life of the communities along the pipeline’s route has been at the center of our objectives. The completion of these 7 playgrounds is one more testament of the positive impact TAP is having on the local communities.”

Vassiliki Sotiropoulou, TAP’s SEI Manager in Greece, added: “I am delighted that thanks to our SEI programme we can welcome children and families back to 7 beautiful playgrounds in Ieropigi, Maniakoi, Oinoi, Mesopotamia, Chiliodendro, Dispilio and Korisos. We are proud that we created a safe place where children can socialise, exercise and spend their free time in a constructive way.”

About the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP)

TAP transports natural gas from the giant Shah Deniz field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea to Europe. The 878 km long pipeline connects with the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) at the Turkish-Greek border in Kipoi, crosses Greece and Albania and the Adriatic Sea, before coming ashore in Southern Italy.

TAP will facilitate gas supplies to South Eastern European countries through prospective interconnectors. In particular, Bulgaria will be able to cover up to 33% of its total gas demand through TAP after the completion of the Interconnector Greece Bulgaria (IGB). TAP’s exits in Greece and Albania, together with the landfall in Italy provide multiple opportunities for further transport of gas from Azerbaijan to the wider European markets.

As a key part of the Southern Gas Corridor, TAP is strategically and economically important to Europe and essential in providing reliable access to a new source of natural gas. TAP plays a significant role in boosting Europe’s energy security, supply diversification, as well as its decarbonisation objectives.

TAP’s shareholding is comprised of bp (20%), SOCAR (20%), Snam (20%), Fluxys (19%), Enagás (16%) and Axpo (5%).
