Berat, Albania. As part of its Social and Environmental Investment (SEI) programme, the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) delivered to the Berat municipality a fleet of 8 new vehicles and equipment, which will be used for cleaning, excavation, infrastructure maintenance and transportation of people and materials.
TAP’s voluntary donation amounts to 455,000 euro and consists of: two excavators, one truck, one roller, one Bobcat, two vehicles for the transportation of staff and materials and one bucked truck for works at heights. This fleet of new vehicles, which are compliant with the EU standards, will be used by the Berat Municipality to carry out public works, such as maintenance, repairs and construction, aiming at maximising the quality and speed of service offered to the local communities.
Ervin Demo, Mayor of the Municipality of Berat, commented: “Thanks to TAP’s donation to the Berat Municipality, our fleet of vehicles is now consolidated. This is a long-awaited day for all Berat Citizens. Our cooperation with TAP is not limited to the donation of these vehicles. I believe that we are very lucky to have a partner of strategic importance such as TAP. Today, we have been given the tools which will help to complete many works, and TAP’s contribution to this end is important“.
Malfor Nuri, TAP Country Manager in Albania, said: “We are glad to complete another important SEI investment. TAP has implemented several SEI projects in the Berat Municipality, such as rehabilitating schools and kindergartens for more than 600 children, providing furniture for the City Library, and cleaning the Osumi riverbed. We have always worked in line with international best practice and standards and we remain committed to safeguarding the quality of life of local communities across the pipeline’s route.”
The TAP SEI programme in Albania, which has reached its final stage, amounts to € 14 million euro investment in social and environmental projects across all the municipalities along the pipeline’s route.
About the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP)
TAP transports natural gas from the giant Shah Deniz field in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea to Europe. The 878 km long pipeline connects with the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) at the Turkish-Greek border in Kipoi, crosses Greece and Albania and the Adriatic Sea, before coming ashore in Southern Italy.
TAP will facilitate gas supplies to South Eastern European countries through prospective interconnectors. In particular, Bulgaria will be able to cover up to 33% of its total gas demand through TAP after the completion of the Interconnector Greece Bulgaria (IGB). TAP’s exits in Greece and Albania together with the landfall in Italy provide multiple opportunities for further transport of gas from Azerbaijan to the wider European markets.
As a key part of the Southern Gas Corridor, TAP is strategically and economically important to Europe and essential in providing reliable access to a new source of natural gas. TAP plays a significant role in boosting Europe’s energy security, supply diversification, as well as decarbonisation objectives.
