TAP’s Contribution to Society Receives Award at BRAVO Sustainability Dialogue & Awards 2021
Athens, Greece. In June 2021, the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) AG was presented with the Bravo Award in the "Society" category, in the context of the Sustainability Dialogue & Awards 2021 in Greece. The Bravo Sustainability Week 2021 is organised by the QualityNet Foundation to promote a systematic social dialogue on sustainability and honour companies whose initiatives have excelled in promoting sustainable development.
At the awards, to which more than 150 companies and organisations submitted their nominations and were evaluated through dialogue with panels of experts and the participation of 14,380 active citizens, TAP was distinguished for its €32 million Social and Environmental Investments (SEI) programme that it committed and implemented in Greece during the past 5 years.
TAP’s SEI programme supports the development priorities of the regions the pipeline traverses, namely Western Macedonia, Central Macedonia and Eastern Macedonia-Thrace, primarily focusing on their social needs, infrastructure and capacity building.
TAP’s Social & Environmental Investment Manager in Greece, Vassiliki Sotiropoulou, stated: “Our SEI programme is at the heart of our engagement and cooperation with the local communities across the pipeline’s route. We are proud to say that since 2015, TAP has implemented 137 projects throughout Northern Greece amounting to approximately €19 million, while 61 more projects are currently under implementation. These cover a wide range of initiatives such as the donation of 32 ambulances and medical equipment to the National Centre for Emergency Assistance, Master’s and Vocational Training programmes, upgrading community facilities and supporting the construction of critical infrastructure, including irrigation networks and photovoltaic parks.”
Its distinction at the Sustainability Dialogue & Awards 2021 is a recognition of TAP’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and to helping to improve the livelihoods and quality of life of the local communities affected by the pipeline’s operation.
The Sustainability Week 2021 brings together on an annual basis responsible organisations, which develop initiatives that support the transition to a sustainable future, as well as active citizens who participate and contribute to the success and development of the initiatives that shape the creation of “the Greece of Tomorrow”.
About the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP)
TAP transports natural gas from the giant Shah Deniz field in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea to Europe. The 878 km long pipeline connects with the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) at the Turkish-Greek border in Kipoi, crosses Greece and Albania and the Adriatic Sea, before coming ashore in Southern Italy.
TAP will facilitate gas supplies to South Eastern European countries through prospective interconnectors. In particular, Bulgaria will be able to cover up to 33% of its total gas demand through TAP after the completion of the Interconnector Greece Bulgaria (IGB). TAP’s exits in Greece and Albania together with the landfall in Italy provide multiple opportunities for further transport of gas from Azerbaijan to the wider European markets.
As a key part of the Southern Gas Corridor, TAP is strategically and economically important to Europe and essential in providing reliable access to a new source of natural gas. TAP plays a significant role in boosting Europe’s energy security, supply diversification, as well as decarbonisation objectives.
TAP’s shareholding is comprised of bp (20%), SOCAR (20%), Snam (20%), Fluxys (19%), Enagás (16%) and Axpo (5%).
